How we count
The 6,153 MW is the announced campus capacity of 31 Sydney sites: 8 under construction and 23 approved, in assessment or on the state's fast-track list. Add the 31 operating sites and the map shows 62. Across NSW, the tracker lists 70.
Which sites count
A site counts once it is under construction, approved, in assessment or on the state's fast-track list. Projects still at scoping, and withdrawn ones, are left out. The Sydney figure leaves out sites outside the Sydney map, such as Kurri Kurri in the Hunter. The NSW tracker includes them.
Which figure we use
Each figure is the campus capacity the operator announced or filed, checked against the NSW Planning Portal. Where documents disagree, we use the signed consent first, then the exhibition notice. Portal summaries can be wrong, so we read the documents behind them. If no figure has been disclosed, we say so and count nothing for that site.
What a figure means
Announced capacity is the size of a campus when it is finished. It isn't what the site draws today, and campuses are built in stages. When we compare the total with NSW's record peak demand, that is for scale, not a forecast of demand.
How current it is
Sydney's sites under construction or in planning were last updated on 2 November 2026, and every one has been checked since 31 October 2026. Operating sites are as at 9 April 2026. We date each claim by the oldest check behind it.
